Janet Walker is a nursing practitioner with more than 20 years of experience in the front lines of health care. She has worked at the bedside with patients and in the hospital board room with management. A regular lecturer and adjunct professor at the University of British Columbia, Janet teaches leadership and management in the School of Nursing. She has contributed to two Canadian texts on the subject.
Currently, Janet is researching and writing the stories of Canada’s medical refugees. These are the patients who cannot get access to urgently needed care in our publicly funded health care system. Driven by pain and interminable wait lines, ordinary Canadians are finding their own solutions in the world of private care in Canada, United States, and increasingly, in foreign countries. By interviewing these medical refugees, Janet reveals what daily life is really like on our wait lists, where in the world people find their medical solutions and what advice they have for the rest of us.
